Conroe, TX, is a dream come true for outdoor recreation enthusiasts, especially in the summer, due to 26 local parks full of amenities. Two sizable natural areas nearby offer additional opportunities for exploring the outdoors. But the warm-weather local crown jewel is the 22,000-acre Lake Conroe, a paradise of fun-filled activities, setting up a great time outside while beating the heat on the water.
Beat the Summer Heat at Lake Conroe
Lake Conroe is located just seven miles west of Conroe proper and features 157 miles of shoreline. Ways to enjoy the water and sandy beaches are nearly endless. Water sports, fishing, boating, and sailing are popular outdoor adventures on Lake Conroe that’ll take the edge off the hot summer temperatures. Several boat rental companies in the immediate vicinity are ready to provide visitors with vessels, jet skis, tubes and more, including Lake Conroe Boat Rentals and 1097 Watersports.
As far as places to stay along Lake Conroe go, Margaritaville Lake Resort stands out with over 300 luxury suites, 30-plus waterfront cottages and a long list of amenities. Margaritaville is a great spot for a family trip, an all-inclusive group destination or a romantic getaway, with its immediate access to Lake Conroe, full-sized pool, water park and a host of additional perks and accommodations.
A day in the sun at Lake Conroe can work up an appetite for tasty food or cold drinks. For that, consider visiting several locales by the lake, including Boathouse Bar & Lounge, Fajita Jacks and Conroe Lake House.
Conroe’s Diverse Lineup of Parks
Conroe has over two dozen public parks, all designed to offer a unique outdoor experience to residents and visitors alike. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park features a pavilion, athletic fields, basketball courts, a play structure, a half-mile jogging/walking trail, and picnic tables.
Carl Barton Jr. Park, at 204 acres, is the largest park in Conroe and is a popular destination for picnics, fishing, get-togethers, and larger events. McDade Park includes an 18-hole disc golf course, while Kasmiersky Park, which offers plenty of shade from the sun with its many oak and pine trees, is also known for its skate park.
Heritage Place, located in the heart of downtown Conroe, is well-known for hosting events like public gardening and crafts, as well as festivals and live music with its gazebo, pavilion and stage.
Cool Down in Town
Additional options for being active, but not under the beating sun, can be found in Conroe. Conroe Aquatic Center features several facilities, including two year-round pools, heated and covered for lap swim, programs and recreational use. There’s also the Conroe Waterpark next door. Note: Aquatic Center and Waterpark access require daily guest passes or memberships.
The C.K. Ray Recreation Center is a state-of-the-art complex perfect for a party or reception rental space. Athletic programs for all ages are available, as are fitness classes, gymnastics, karate, and dance courses. Weekly recreation includes pickleball, racquetball and basketball. For Fans of the Forest
Peace, quiet, and the great outdoors can truly be appreciated in the W.G. Jones State Forest, where popular activities include birdwatching for the endangered Red Cockaded Woodpecker, horseback riding, fishing and picnicking.
