    CEDC Celebrates National Homeownership Month

    June 3, 2024

“Every family deserves to have the opportunity to reap the benefits of homeownership …” - NAR.

    June is National Homeownership Month!

What started as a week-long homeownership awareness campaign in 1995, was expanded to a month-long celebration in 2002. This celebration is rooted in the adage of owning a home as being part of the American Dream. Homeownership represents stability and is an investment in generational wealth. Homeownership Month provides an opportunity to educate potential homeowners about the benefits and challenges of purchasing a home while highlighting the need for accessible and affordable housing.

    Homes Surge in Houston’s Suburbs

As Montgomery County continues to flourish, so does the availability of affordable housing with new developments in the suburbs of Houston:

    • Silverthorne, a new 1,341-acre development, will feature close to 3,500 homes in Conroe.
    • Cielo is an 840-home community just outside Conroe city limits and is currently welcoming its first residents.
    • Ridgeland Hills is the latest new-home community in Willis, minutes from Conroe, with 124 available homes.

Continuing in the vein of availability, Conroe has homes for everyone from entry-level laborers to executives of large corporations and recently ranked second and fourth in the Houston Association of REALTORS’ ® Hottest Communities in the Houston Area report. According to the report:

    • Conroe Southeast’s home sales increased by 85.7% year over year
    • Conroe Northeast’s home sales increased by 47.9%

In addition to the report, Conroe currently has 2,427 homes for sale and 567 homes for rent.

    Benefits of Homeownership

“Whether you own or rent a home, you’re invested in and connected to the place you live. While homeownership is a good fit for many, renting also helps people invest in their communities and build wealth for their families and generations to come.” - Tom Vilsack, USDA Secretary

Homeownership is part of the American Dream for many, not all. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2022, homeownership rates in the:

    • Midwest hit 70%
    • South hit 67.3%
    • Northeast hit 62.5%
    • West hit 61.4%

For residents opting to own, many non-financial benefits come with homeownership:

    • A heightened sense of pride and maturity
    • Increased community involvement
    • Increased privacy and seclusion
    • Increased freedom/flexibility for creative design and hobby exploration
    • Improved well-being and less stress
    • Increased housing security and stability
    • Positive foundation to start or expand a family
